Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Birmingham, offers hands-on training from internationally-trained chef instructors who provide individualized learning for our students. Our culinary arts program gives you an intensive education in food preparation with realistic training in modern, fully equipped teaching kitchens. Plus, you'll have plenty of on-the-job work experience, even before you graduate!
Be in the Kitchen on the First Day of Your Culinary Arts Classes
This Culinary Arts program offers practical training that follows the guidelines of the American Culinary Federation. You'll have the opportunity to learn fundamental, intermediate, and advanced culinary skills — and find out how to make a living doing what you love. Plus, unlike some culinary arts colleges, you'll be working in the kitchen on day one!
As part of the Culinary Arts diploma program, you'll also learn resume building, math and hospitality managerial skills to prepare you for your career in the food services industry.
You'll Get On-the-Job Work Experience!
Our 36-week culinary program covers a range of culinary and pastry skills and provides real-world experience through an externship at a catering firm, restaurant or resort. This on-the-job experience, combined with your grasp of culinary fundamentals from your classes and labs, can make you a desirable candidate for employment after graduation. Our Career Services team maintains placement relationships with local employers as well as Corporate Externship partners such as:

Culinard students also have the ability to gain real-world experience as a volunteer for a number of special events in the community, sometimes collaborating with Culinard faculty members and area employers to feed large groups of people in a short timeframe. Additionally, at the end of your third term, you will help create a "grand buffet" for family and friends, working with your classmates to plan, prepare and present the meal in its entirety.
