Pharm Tech Duties
Pharmacy techs perform a variety of duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Our pharmacy technician curriculum will help prepare you for these duties, including:
- Taking patient information
- Counting or pouring medications into dispensing containers
- Managing the cash register
- Packaging and labeling prescriptions
- Keeping inventory
- Conducting other routine pharmacy tasks

Hands-on Training for Pharmacy Technician Careers
In addition to your work in the classroom, you will get hands-on training in our well-supplied pharmacy lab. During these simulated lab experiences, you'll learn how to use a variety of pharmacy equipment and tools, make IV solutions, mix creams, emulsions and pastes as well as learn about sterile compounding and drug dispensing. Our pharmacy lab is stocked with prescription bottles, labels, pharmacy computers and cash registers to offer a true-to-life pharmacy experience.
On-the-job Work Experience is Part of the Program
An exciting part of this program is the 11-week externship, where you'll get on-the-job experience working under a licensed pharmacist. You might get placed with one of our National Externship partners which include:

- Fred's Pharmacy
Getting Pharm Tech Certification — The Exam Fee is Included in Your Tuition!
In order to become a certified pharmacy technician, you must take a national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (CPhT). Our curriculum includes a certification review course to your prepare for this exam. 2 Certification is not required to work as a pharmacy technician in some states, but it can be a valuable asset when applying for jobs. A one-time testing fee for this exam is included in your tuition. Virginia College tuition also includes pharmacy technician graduates' immunizations, books and state board licensing fees.
