Therapeutic Massage - Diploma / Certificate
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, one of the most frequent comments massage therapists make about their occupation is, "I feel fortunate to have found work I love." Maybe massage therapists love their work because they get to help their clients in ways that other practitioners can't: by relieving their pain and stress through a caring and expert practice of massage therapy.
Discover Work You'll Love
Massage therapists work in settings like private offices, studios, hospitals, resorts, nursing homes, fitness centers, spas and sports medicine facilities. Some massage therapists also travel to clients' homes or offices to provide a massage. Massage therapy is used in treating painful ailments, decompressing tired and overworked muscles, reducing stress, rehabilitating sports injuries and promoting general health. The Therapeutic Massage diploma/certificate program at Virginia College takes about nine months to complete and is designed as a foundation for your massage therapy career.
Hands-on Learning for Career Success
You'll only take courses that pertain to your success in the field of massage therapy, such as:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Review for the certification examination
- Various massage techniques
- Nutrition and health science
- Medical law and ethics
All clinical massage technique courses include in-class bodywork. Students also practice techniques on real clients, under instructor supervision, in the on-campus therapeutic massage clinic to hone their developing skills. This practice is required to improve and enhance the quality of bodywork.
