Interior Design Student at Virginia College/Birmingham Wins Top Award

Posted: Thursday, March 19, 2009

Ketura Mattingly, a student in the Interior Design program at the Birmingham, Alabama, campus of Virginia College, is the first-place winner in the recent Alabama Chapter of the International Interior Design Association's (IIDA) 2009 IDIE Awards. Ketura was awarded a $1500 scholarship at the biennial IIDA gala held on March 6, 2009.
The winning entry was a design solution for Edge Studios, a recording studio. Ketura's project included a company logo and two-story luxury skybox. The space provided everything from complex ceiling details to a sleek entertainment area to technologically advanced lighting fixtures to modular and contemporary furnishings. Also, the project had to meet ADA requirements and use more than 25% green products.

The purpose of the IIDA competition is to recognize and encourage outstanding work in the field of Interior Design. The competition is open to all students who meet the qualifications: being a student member of IIDA, and either a junior or senior at his or her respective school. Project entries were received from various design programs around the state including Samford University, the University of Alabama, Auburn University, as well as Virginia College. The winning entries were featured in the March 13, 2009 issue of the Birmingham Business Journal.

The bachelor's degree program at Virginia College in Birmingham is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER) and provides students and graduates with courses that range from Building Construction to Residential Design, from Lighting to 2 and 3-dimensional computer aided drafting. Students earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts upon completion of the program. Virginia College also offers an associate degree in Interior Design at its Mobile, Alabama, campus.
