Virginia College Staff Member Organizes Charity Softball Tourney
Posted: Wednesday, May 27, 2009
During the week, Veronica Rico is part of the Greenfields team, helping to open new Virginia College campuses. But in her spare time, she is busy organizing a softball tournament that raises thousands of dollars for a very worthy cause. The fourth Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Co-Ed Softball Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 22, at Huntsville's Metro Kiwanis Sportplex. Proceeds from the entry fees from each team as well as profits from concessions and raffle drawings go 100% to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Alabama/Gulf Coast Chapter in Birmingham. Rico's previous events have already raised thousands of dollars for the Society. Even the trophies for winners are donated by Redstone Recognitions.
Last year, the Huntsville Virginia College campus fielded two teams in the tournament. The faculty/staff team had fun and nobody was injured. The student team won the tournament! That trophy is on display at the school for prospective students to see.
"My dad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in late 2006," Rico says. "I felt powerless so I decided to do what I could in helping to find a cure."
Anyone interested in having a team participate in the tournament should contact Veronica 205-747-6541 or email her at veronica.rico@vc.edu. For more on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, contact Cindy Walton at 205-989-0098.
