Virginia College-Huntsville President to Receive Education Week President's Award

Posted: Thursday, October 22, 2009

The president of Virginia College's Huntsville, Alabama, campus, Jim Foster, is slated to receive one of the area's highest recognitions for educators. During American Education Week in November, Foster will be presented the President's Award at a special luncheon. Sponsored by the National Education Association, American Education Week spotlights the importance of education from kindergarten through college and the need for everyone to do his or her part in making schools great. This year, American Education Week starts November 15.

Foster has served as head of the Huntsville Virginia College campus since 1993 and was one of the founding members of the school's parent company, Education Corporation of America, which now has 13 on-ground Virginia College schools across the southeast, a thriving online school, and four Golf Academy of America campuses. He has been in the education business for 25 years, as has his wife, Pat, the former Director of Admissions in Huntsville, who now holds a corporate admissions training role. Foster has the unique ability to greet each of his school's over 800 students by first name and often dons the apron and cooks for student socials. Under his guidance, the school contributes to many charitable and community events, both in donations and by volunteering. He currently serves as campus liaison for Education Corporation of America's United Way campaign at their schools across the country.

Under Jim and Pat Foster's guidance, Virginia College came to Huntsville and assumed the student body of a school that was no longer able to operate. From just a few students, the campus has grown to over 800. There have been more than 3,000 successful graduates since then. And from just a few academic programs, Virginia College now offers 27 different ones, including healthcare, computer technology and design, medical office, and personal services. Its most recent addition was Cosmetology, which included building beautiful new labs and adding V's Student Cosmetology Services, which offers a wide range of beauty services to the public for a nominal fee.

In addition to the accomplishments achieved by the husband-and-wife team and the success of their thousands of graduates, Foster is most proud of his six grandchildren.
