The Gamma Beta Phi Society (GBP) is an honor and service organization for students in all colleges and universities in the United States. GBP is both non-profit and co-educational. The Society was incorporated in March of 1964 by a group of college educators in South Carolina and now has over 170 national chapters on college campuses around the United States. Specifically, at Virginia College, GBP membership is open to any student in any program of study who has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and has completed a minimum of 12 credit hours. After an academic analysis, the invitations were sent to all qualified prospective students in July.

The Faculty Advisor, Dr. Steve Webb, held two informational meetings with the assistance of the current GBP student officers and student members to answer questions about the Honor Society. One of the main points of discussion was the new GBP Peer Student Tutoring program that was initiated during the Spring Quarter 2009 along with fund-raising plans for the March of Dimes National Service Project.

The Induction Ceremony for the Virginia College at Birmingham GBP Honor Society was held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge. At the event, 38 new members were introduced in front of an audience of about 150 people who braved bad weather to attend. Special guests included Ms. Candy Smith, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Jim Morgan, BBA and MBA Program Director. Dr. Webb, Mr. Henry Mosley (Security Supervisor at the campus), and three GBP student officers, Wes Rankin (President), Tiffany Granville (Vice-President), and Crystal Johnson (Secretary), conducted the service. Dr. Webb says, "It was truly heart-warming to see the pride of accomplishment on the faces of our students and their families." The event ended with refreshments provided by Virginia College's Culinard Catering.
