In Honor of Read Across America Day, celebrated annually on March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday, Virginia College at Huntsville's campus president, Jim Foster visited two daycare centers in the area to read aloud the classic Green Eggs and Ham. He was accompanied by school receptionist Star Green, dressed as the infamous Cat in the Hat. The children at Kids Kingdom Child Care Centers enjoyed their surprise guests and the basket of animal crackers that followed.
This annual celebration generates enthusiasm for reading nationwide and focuses the country's attention on how important it is to motivate children to read. Reading opens the doors to achievement, and Read Across America Day celebrations are crucial building blocks toward making the joys of reading an integral part of every child's life.
In addition, the students, staff and faculty are collecting children's books throughout the month to be donated to various children's facilities, including homeless shelters, daycare and community centers, public schools and after-school programs.
