Virginia College Networking Students Reach Out to the Community

Posted: Friday, April 17, 2009

Students from the School of Network Engineering at Virginia College in Birmingham are reaching out to the community again this year to assist the The Junior League of Birmingham.

Members of the Junior League of Birmingham began dropping off donated computers in late 2008 for the Network Engineering students to refurbish. Students from Jim Holt’s classes put the skills they had learned in the classroom to work. Program Director Chris Humphrey said, “This is our second year to work with the Junior League. This partnership gives our students excellent real-world, hands-on experience.”

Once the computers have been refurbished, they are donated back to Junior League of Birmingham. The league then will either donate them to local charities or sell them in their annual Bargain Carousel event. The proceeds that are raised from the event are returned to the Birmingham community through one of the league’s thirty seven community projects.

Virginia College in Birmingham offers skills training in a number of information technology disciplines, including, computer network engineering and network management.
