How to Get the Haircut You Want

Tips for Getting the Haircut You Want

Getting a haircut can be frightening — especially when you’re wanting to change your look. Have you ever gone to your stylist with a haircut in mind only to leave with a style that wasn’t quite what you wanted? Two of our Virginia College Cosmetology program directors, A'Timberly Mapp and Tori Hudson, are here to help by revealing the secrets to getting the haircut you want so you can walk out of the salon with a look you love.

Questions to Ask Your Hairstylist to Avoid a Haircut You Hate

  • Can you suggest a haircut that suits my face and head shape?

    • The most important thing when getting a haircut is to make sure that you choose a style that compliments your face and head shape. Ask the stylist for example pictures.

  • Will you show me examples of what you consider long, medium and short hairstyles?

    • Choose which length you believe suits you best.

  • Is this hairstyle easy to maintain?

    • In addition to being right for your face, a haircut must be right for your lifestyle. Be sure to ask which products and tools (flat irons, blow-dryers, curling irons, hot rollers, etc.) are needed to achieve the style you want.

  • Do I need to use special products to get the look I am trying achieve?

  • How often do I need to have it shaped up to maintain the style?

How to Communicate the Haircut You Want to Your Hairstylist

  • “Be very specific about your style desires, for example, if you are wanting bangs or a bob,” says Mapp.

  • Be honest. Make sure you tell your stylist things you currently dislike about your hair and about old haircuts that you disliked. Also be especially honest when it comes to describing your home regimen and typical styling time.

  • Bring photos. “Stylists appreciate photo inspiration because it makes their job easier knowing you have some idea of what you are looking for,” says Hudson.

Cosmetologists are trained beauty professionals who are proficient in styling hair, nails and makeup. They are creative artists and entrepreneurs who understand how to make clients look their best, but it is important to find a stylist you can trust and who will listen to you when you tell them what you want.

If you’re nervous about going in for a new look, don’t worry! Keep these tips in mind and ask the right questions — your stylist will do their best to help you achieve the look you want.
