Career CompassTM Certified Professional

Offered by the Virginia College Career Development department at no additional cost and devoted to sharpening the skills that could make the difference in a student's job search.

Take Your Education to the Next Level

The Career CompassTM Certified Professional program allows students to achieve more, show commitment to their future careers and become better-rounded candidates upon graduation.*

The program consists of seven certification activities that are related to job placement:

1. Job Search Strategies

The first session focuses on job-search resources, appropriate professional references and online job posting search skills.

2. Elevator Speech

The idea behind the elevator speech is simple: What would you say if you only had a 15-second elevator ride with someone you wanted to impress professionally? We help you put your best foot forward by crafting an elevator speech based on your skill set. When you can quickly and confidently state your career goals and skills, it helps others understand how they can help you — or hire you.

3. Résumé Building and Portfolio Development

Learn how to critique résumés from an employer’s perspective, spotting and avoiding common résumé mistakes. Understanding how to present your academic work and other achievements to potential employers could help you get noticed. By the end of the activity, you will have a résumé and finished portfolio.

4. Social Media Presence and Networking

Some say it is all about who you know. Even if you are starting from scratch, we can help you generate ideas on building your professional network by working with your peers. In this activity, we explain how to manage your social media presence to avoid pitfalls and enhance your job search. You will learn the importance of posting responsibly on social media and the benefits of powerful professional tools like LinkedIn. Students who undertake this activity will complete a list of network contacts to share and finalize with their Career Development advisor.

5. Dress for Success

First impressions count. We help you learn the differences between professional and unprofessional clothing in a variety of scenarios. By the end of this activity, you will attend a mock interview while dressed in professional business attire.

6. Before, During and After the Interview

Practice makes perfect. With this activity, we give you the opportunity to practice your interview skills so when the perfect job opportunity comes along, you will be ready for the interview process. Students will participate in a speed interviewing activity and have several months to complete mock interviews.

7. Self-Awareness

Once you land a job, focusing on being a professional will become part of your daily life. You will want to put into practice all the traits of professionalism you’ve learned so you’ll have the opportunity to grow in your new job.

With each activity a student completes, he or she will be awarded a corresponding Career CompassTM Certified Professional Certificate. Students who earn all seven certificates will become Career CompassTM Certified Professionals.

This program is offered by Career Development and involves out-of-class components. Graduates interested in receiving information about any of the seven activity areas can contact Career Development to set up a set up a session to get more information.
