About the Accounting Specialist Degree Program

The Virginia College Accounting Specialist associate's degree program covers a variety of courses in an effort to help you graduate with a well-rounded education in the accounting field. You'll find a special emphasis placed on combining accounting theory and practice with the microcomputer with advanced computerized accounting classes. Upon graduation, you will be encouraged to sit for the Certified Bookkeeper (CB) national certification.

Our courses are taught by instructors with experience in the accounting field who draw on their experience to enrich classroom discussions with real-world scenarios. They will help provide you with the attention and support you need to work toward graduation and a career in accounting.

Accounting Degree Jobs

This program is designed to prepare you for entry-level accounting jobs or bookkeeping jobs such as:

  • Accounting clerk
  • Accounts payable/receivable specialists
  • Personal income tax clerk
  • Collection clerk
  • Professional bookkeeper

An employment growth rate of 11% is projected in this field from 2012 to 2022. As the number of organizations increases and financial regulations become stricter, there will be greater demand for these workers to maintain books and provide accounting services.*

Accounting Salary and Bookkeeper Salary Insights

The median annual wage for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks was $35,170 in May 2012. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10% earned less than $21,610, and the top 10 percent earned more than $54,310.*
